About the Book for Business Success
Discover how real-world experience shaped a simple framework for leaders and entrepreneurs.
The Book That Guides Leaders
Chaos to Structure
What greeted me as the new owner was not a well-oiled machine, but chaos. Resources were scarce, decisions were based on limited experience, and crucial business functions needed to be built from scratch. For years, I had the constant, familiar feeling of being "always in the weeds."
Does that sound like your business? Whether you’re a manufacturer, hospital, farmer, physician, or an entrepreneur, the initial struggle for a clear decision-making structure is universal. My desire for longevity—to build a business that could be passed down—required extra thought and care.
Story of Two Reinventions
This book is part memoir, part manual, tracking the incredible journey through two necessary makeovers. The first, guided by the Business Is Simple structure, transformed Handy from a single-product, seasonal soft-shell crab processor with one telephone line into a coast-to-coast national company. We implemented major upgrades, built a modern processing facility funded through bank borrowings, and achieved a premium quality that met the standards of Japanese and European customers.
The second makeover was a matter of survival, forced by environmental changes that severely reduced our crab supply. With zero contacts and little more than a rumor, I booked a flight to Bangkok. This led to far-flung adventures in Thailand and India, where I navigated sleepless nights and cultural challenges to establish international soft crab processing and, later, two more product lines—crab cakes and pasteurized crabmeat—in additional Asian countries.
